Stella McCartney honours mum with post-mastectomy bra
‘We just wanted to make something that allows women undergoing this to have something to be proud of, something with no shame attached’.
Stella – the daughter of singer Sir Paul McCartney – has pulled Cara Delevingne onboard to model the range after dropping Kate Moss, who was the face of her first breast cancer awareness campaign previous year. The “Louise Listening” undergarment, a nod to Linda’s middle name, was designed for women who have undergone the life-changing surgery.
Explaining her thinking behind the bra, Stella said she wanted to create something lovely into a “bra that is taboo”.
We’ve long known that it doesn’t matter what size cup you are, your girls deserve to be supported by a lovely bra.
For so many women, having a mastectomy is a life-saving miracle of modern medicine – so much so that many women with a high risk of breast cancer elect to undertake the procedure these days as a preventative measure.
For most feeling pretty, womanly or glamorous goes out the window and the triviality of vanity and everything associated with it pales into insignificance. AnaOno Intimates-which was launched by Dana Donofree after she survived her own diagnosis at just 28 years old-and Nashville-based The Pink Bra both specialize in lovely bras and sports bras for different stages of the recovery process. A percentage of the proceeds derived from the Listening Louise bra and the Alina Playing bra and panty set will be donated to the Linda McCartney Centre in England, the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States and Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The charity has introduced a #nolessawoman hashtag to raise awareness about the disease to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Death rates from breast cancer have fallen since 1990 because of screening and early detection, increased awareness, and improving treatment options.
Women can make regular check themselves by feeling for lumps, swelling, tenderness and skin texture around the breast and nipples.
Have you been affected by breast cancer?
While a cause hasn’t been identified there are environmental risk factors that doctors warn against, such as: A lack of physical activity, poor diet, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, radiation chest therapy and combined hormone replacement therapy.
