Stephen Colbert Finds The One Thing Donald Trump Won’t Talk About Anymore
Credit where credit is due: After continually being the butt of late night jokes, GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump isn’t afraid to go on late night shows and be… the butt of jokes.
Tuesday’s sit-down followed Colbert’s challenge to Trump from earlier in the summer to appear on his show and after several bits at Trump’s expense.
“Are you sure you’re not running for president?”
The rapper wore a Mexico soccer jersey during his performance, which has been a topic of conversation for Trump since he threw his hat in the ring.
“Now listen, Mr. Trump“, he rasped at one point, backed by the gospel harmonies of four backup singers, the saloon-style piano of Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste and the sonic swell of more than 12 sidemen.
Trump’s sit down with Colbert also included a lengthy discussion about the former Celebrity Apprentice host’s plans to build a wall between Mexico and the United States. Colbert asked that whether it is enough. “I’m not going to say this stuff writes itself but you certainly do deliver it on time everyday”.
Trump was keen to discuss his proposed border wall along the U.S.-Mexican border that has become the cornerstone of his campaign, and he echoed comments he’s made frequently on the campaign trail.
“It shouldn’t have happened”, Trump said.
“You’re their worst nightmare”.
“I think the establishment in the Republican Party probably isn’t that thrilled”, he agreed. The right-leaning American Action Forum, estimates that it would cost $600 billion to forcibly remove every undocumented immigrant in the country. “Because I would never say that”.
“You know you really well”, Colbert said.
Colbert quipped: “You know the meatball is being dragged down the stairs by the pizza rat”. Trump, however, wasn’t playing: “I don’t talk about that anymore”.
Colbert also offered Trump a “big fat meatball to hit out the park” in asking him directly if he believed US President Barack Obama was born in the United States.
“I don’t talk about it any more”, Trump replied.
Trump’s “Tonight Show” guest spot was considered to be a “love-fest” by some, but gave Fallon abig ratings win over Colbert that night.
