Stephen Colbert honours France in tribute, lays into ISIS
In addition to Colbert’s speech, house band Jon Batiste and Stay Human opened the show with the French national anthem.
Colbert opted out of his usual stand-up monologue and made a decision to deliver his opening remarks while sitting at his desk. NY is a city that sadly knows too well the horror the French experienced on Friday.
Famous atheist and washed up 1950s stand-up comic impersonator Bill Maher went on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night, and it was a gleefully awkward experience for everyone.
Colbert then talks about how he has cats who do backflips and that the terrorists and the feline animals had one thing in common- “They were both pussies”. But we stand with the people of France as a friend and an ally, and offer the hope that there is a way through the unspeakable tragedy. They’ve given the United States so much over the years: Aid to General Washington in our fight for independence. He rattles on about how USA’s “Statue of Liberty” – a symbol of freedom emerged from the European nation.
“In a tribute to its mother country, Lady Liberty offered ISIS a fitting gesture”, Colbert said as a picture of the Statue of Liberty giving a blurred middle finger came on screen.
Or maybe they’re just a little skittish about all the people and odd machinery that comes with making a live television appearance on a major late-night show in a very big venue like the Ed Sullivan Theater, because cats are easily terrified of the stupidest things.
“I wanted to start my show tonight by once again offering our thoughts and prayers to the people of Paris”, Colbert said. No. Is it a valid expression? So we said, absolutely, let’s have them on. “Take Pascal’s wager: If you’re wrong, you’re an idiot, but if I’m right, you’re going to hell”.
