Stephen Colbert Revals First ‘Late Show’ Guests, Trump Jokes and Letterman’s
As BWW reported last week, Colbert had revealed that his first non-musical guest would be Hollywood A-lister George Clooney.
Colbert introduced the lineup Monday on the Television Critics Association press tour, Variety studies.
Colbert further elaborated that it was time to drop the character as he felt he had done everything he could do with him and with his older show.
“When I talked to him I was able to thank him for a few bits I just plain stole from him. Now I’m hoping certain people stay in the campaign until September 9″, Colbert continued.
Stephen Colbert challenged the presidential candidate to appear on the Late Show when he takes over the CBS program later this summer.
That might sound like a Colbert declaration of independence, but it’s actually his homage to Dave’s final thoughts on late-night feng shui.
The show will remain at the Ed Sullivan Theater, although the set is being overhauled, and will resemble the Jazz Age Broadway theater it once was – look for Colbert’s desk on the opposite side of the stage.
“The Late Show” debut is scheduled for September 8, and he’s anxious to get back on stage.
When Stephen Colbert was named as David Letterman’s replacement, he became a beacon of hope for viewers who want more than to watch guests play beer pong or square off in another lip sync battle. “In fact, he will be my first musical guest”. But, Donald Trump’s participation has definitely upped the ante for the new late-night host. “This is the longest I’ve gone since I was 24 not performing in front of a live audience”, he said. Given Colbert’s iconic role at Comedy Central, a mock political commentator with the same name who poked fun at conservatives, it’s hard to gauge how Bush’s appearance on the show will go. “I used to be depleted toward the end of each meeting from experiencing the labyrinth in his mind before I said anything, sufficiently quick so the group of onlookers couldn’t tell”. “I didn’t realize that was going to be even more fun”. “You know what? There have been some great presidents, there have been some bad presidents”, Colbert said.
