Stephen Colbert Was Leaving ‘The Colbert Report’ Anyway
Though Seinfeld did warn viewers about Colbert in his intro to the episode, which should remind everyone that even if there’s no late-night drama, it won’t be boring. It’s shocking. I feel like that girl who panics when her dad shaves, except in reverse.
New Late Show host Stephen Colbert appeared on the sixth season finale of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee today, and he offered a few pretty fascinating insights into his departure from The Colbert Report.
“I was ready to stop”, Colbert said.
During his time with Seinfeld, Colbert once again invoked the indie band, this time referencing the lyrics to aforementioned album’s title track to comment on the strangeness of existence. That’s my problem… I don’t know if I could have done it much longer, because you have to be invested in your model. “The Letterman thing fell into my lap”. In fact, he and “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon celebrated his new gig over drinks.
Seinfeld can be seen in the episode picking up Colbert at his Montclair home in a 1964 Morgan Plus 4 Roadster.
“To make a guest appearance on your show, it’s no f-ing fun”, Seinfeld said.
Describing the working conditions on the show, Colbert said: “For the first couple years, it was like I lived there”. “We laughed and told stories, that’s it. And it was lovely”. Later they talk about manly actors George C. Scott and Sam Shepard and that old ideal, then briefly touch on what Seinfeld says is the changing levels of masculinity and femininity in both sexes.
