Stephen Curry shines as champs edge
They have won their first four games by a record 100 points – and Curry is proving that his MVP award is no fluke.
Golden State’s Klay Thompson scored 16 points on 7-of-18 shooting Wednesday.
Paul had 24 points and Blake Griffin added 23 as the Clippers came back from 17 points down and took a 97-87 lead with 7:56 left. They have probably one of the best crowds in the league and I’m proud of the way we came in.
The Warriors are soaring into a fresh, mind-blowing realm as their head coach recovers from two offseason back surgeries. Harrison Barnes had 21 points, including a big 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter that stalled any hope of a Denver comeback. Curry then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and after being fouled beyond the arc hit three more free throws to push the lead to 84-42. He raised his arms to the crowd after a 27-footer made it 103-99.
The Clippers refused to go away and went ahead 106-105 with 1:16 to play.
As much as Wednesday night was a reminder of how hard it is to win in the Western Conference right now and how that won’t be a given for the Warriors, Golden State still beat their best challenger to date in one of the NBA’s best current rivalries.
Curry is also averaging 5.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Golden State had control in the first half but it was a different story in the third quarter as Lob City rallied and got the lead despite All-Star playmaker Chris Paul sitting on the bench due to foul trouble. That’s 50 points. 5-0.
The New Orleans Pelicans once again faced the Warriors’ leading MVP guard, Stephen Curry, who scored 53 points in Saturday’s game. The 1996-96 Chicago Bulls won an National Basketball Association record 72 games, and the Warriors had by far the best record in the league a year ago with a 67-15 mark.
There might be a few nights though that someone has to step up behind Curry and help lead the way when and if (and that’s a big if, at this point) Curry has an off night or the Warriors simply need a boost from someone else. The main result of all this controversy surrounding the Warriors’ championship run is that it has pissed the team off. Stephen Curry was quoted as saying sarcastically, “I apologize for us being healthy, I apologize for us playing who was in front of us”.
As for Paul’s injury, Rivers said that taking him out was more of a precautionary measure.
“Yeah, I think we can compete with not just them, but anyone”, he said.
In the third quarter alone he scored 28 points and you will see each shot in the video below.
