Stephen Curry won’t be on US Olympic basketball team in Rio
FILE – In this August 16, 2014, file photo, United States’ Stephen Curry (4), of the Golden State Warriors, is shown during a break in the action of an exhibition basketball game between the United States and Brazilian national teams, in Chicago.
But I also think he would’ve loved to play for the USA team in Brazil-the national team practices and games are when the alpha players of the league get together and bond and evaluate each other up close, and knowing Curry’s drive, I’m sure he looked forward to lighting up a few practices and then joking about it with them later.
“My previous experiences with USA Basketball have been incredibly rewarding, educational and enjoyable, which made this an extremely hard decision for me and my family”, the 28-year-old added.

Perhaps the problems in Rio, including crime, polluted water and Zika virus, influenced Curry’s decision.
Curry, the first player to be voted a unanimous MVP and the league’s leading scorer, certainly would have been on it.
He has played a starring role in the Warriors record-breaking 73-win season, smashing his own record for three-pointers with 402. He hasn’t told USA Basketball he is out and still wants to play. But he is keenly watching the developments.
Curry has won a pair of world titles with the Americans and was a starter when they won the 2014 Basketball World Cup.
According to sources, players have been advised to not bring their families to Brazil and to sleep in malaria nets to avoid being affected.
Curry would have been a certainty to be selected for the United States of America team if available. If he is invited to play, he will play. Many other athletes and even fellow National Basketball Association stars have, however, publicly expressed their concerns over the mosquito-born illness, which has been linked to neurological birth defects and has been wreaking havoc throughout Brazil.
The World Health Organization, however, concluded canceling the Games wouldn’t “significantly alter the worldwide spread of Zika virus” as Brazil is just one of many countries dealing with it. Zika chief among his concerns.
