Steve Bruce: Hull boss holds England manager talks
Their statement read: “The club can confirm that manager Steve Bruce has held informal discussions regarding the England vacancy, although no official approach has been received from the FA”.
Allardyce’s future should become clearer this week, with the Football Association set to speed up the process of appointing Roy Hodgson’s successor.
“You don’t really need to coach global players, do you?” said Bruce – a close friend of Allardyce.
Just because they made wrong choices of foreign managers before (Capello & Sven) shouldn’t mean they never go down that route again, if common sense is telling you that is the only option.
“He gets labelled a wee bit with this style of football, how he wants to play, but I haven’t seen that so much in recent years”.
“It’s not a problem to take me into the higher reaches of the Champions League or Premier League and would make my job a lot easier in winning it”. “I put my case across and let’s hope I’m successful”.
Prior to talks with the FA, Bruce recently said it was “highly flattering” to be linked with a role he hopes goes to an Englishman.
“What I said in the interview has to remain there but we have got to take away the fear, especially in tournaments, for sure and somehow”, he said.
“We’ve only won one of our last seven games at two tournaments, and we’ve got some good players, especially young players”.
It is anticipated that the trio will have spoken to all of the realistic candidates – including Eddie Howe, who is in America with Bournemouth, and Jurgen Klinsmann – ahead of the board meeting.
The three-man FA panel conducting the search is made up of former Manchester United chief executive David Gill, FA technical director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Martin Glenn.
The Hull manager led his team back to the Premier League at the end of last season, after they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in the Championship play-off final. This would give him as much time as possible to prepare for England’s opening World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in September.
