Steve Harvey Apologises For Miss Universe Gaffe
Miss Philippines moved down stage and stood beside Miss Columbia, still wearing the crown.
The host claimed responsibility for the mix up and confusion, then soon after announced Wurtzbach as the real victor of this year’s pageant.
Shortly thereafter, the crown was taken away from Miss Colombia including the sash, and was placed on to the rightful victor, Miss Philippines’ Wurtzbach. The already awkward situation was made worse by the fact that Miss Colombia is not entirely fluent in English and had been using a translator throughout the night. It turned out Harvey had read the wrong name.
It took another round of clarifications from Harvey as well as a close-up view of the cue card for the girls to finally realise what was going on. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the contestant from the Philippines, had won.
‘Miss Universe 2015, Is Miss Philippines, ‘ Harvey clarified amid a confused reaction from the crowd.
Saying she was now the voice of Miss Universe, Wurtzbach apologised for what happened, saying the blunder was not done on objective and “it was an honest mistake”. Disgusting mistake, but the right thing – I can show it to you right here.
To say she was shocked was an understatement. “We feel so badly, but it’s still a great night”.
During the event, Harvey was said to have brought his controversial sense of humor when he claimed that he needed to see the women in their bikinis again.
Steve Harvey showed his card to proof to the audience that is was his mistake, reading the card wrong.
About a minute after Miss Colombia was announced as the victor, Steve Harvey approached the front of the stage and said he had to make an announcement.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was once owner of the pageant, but sold it earlier this year after he created controversy over his comments about Mexican immigrants.
