Steve Harvey makes fun of his Miss Universe gaffe
He tried to correct his mix-up, as soon as he was made aware of it, by announcing that he had made a mistake, and that the real victor was actually Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurztbach.
Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was accidentally crowned the winner of the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday night after host Steve Harvey misread the results and announced her as the victor over Miss Philippines.
Former owner of the Miss Universe pageant, business magnate and United States presidential hopeful Donald Trump, suggested that Miss Wurtzbach and Miss Gutierrez share the crown.
Wurtzbach also said in her message that she saw how strong and attractive Gutiérrez was during the time they spent together while preparing for the pageant.
“I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night”. Blessed with a subscription to TV Guide (we weren’t cheapos who depended on the free weekly insert from the newspaper for our viewing pleasure), I could schedule the Saturday nights that coincided with any one of those three respective coronations days ahead of time.
Steve Harvey has shown his sense of humour as he made light of his recent Miss Universe blunder on Christmas Day. “And to all the fans who are still fighting about this…Please let’s all stop now”. Arguing and sending hateful messages to each other defeats the whole objective.
Harvey took full responsibility for the mix-up on stage, apologising to the audience.
Miss White said: “If he returns next year, I have no objections to that”.
Some girls, she said, felt that Miss Wurtzbach was “guarded” while Miss Gutierrez-Arevalo appeared “stuck-up and arrogant”. “You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves”.
“I felt calm when I was called first runner-up because I felt it was fate”, she said. “The Vice President of Farouk recommended that I be added to the Miss Universe roster”.
It does seem that all is well now and that the world is more than ready to forgive Steve Harvey for his mistake.
But most of the Miss Universe hopefuls were “really nice” and many contestants became friends.
