‘Steve Jobs’ takes big screen deep-dive into the man behind Apple
The film was subject to many snags before filming began – David Fincher was originally on board to direct and both Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale passed on the role of Jobs before new director Danny Boyle offered it to Fassbender.
“He (Steve Jobs) never says “I was wrong” explicitly, but it’s there”. From the very first frame, Jobs (Michael Fassbender) is presented as a domineering boss, threatening an engineer to fix a glitch in the presentation or be publicly humiliated.
This week Trevor Noah welcomed Seth Rogen, who plays Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the film, as well as screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.
Fassbender did wear brown contacts to match the color of Jobs” eyes, and by the end of the movie he donned the black turtleneck sweater, jeans and New Balance sneakers that made up the “uniform’ of the Apple co-founder later in his life.
“To be honest, I loved them all and it was fantastic”.
But, according to the Gibney documentary, by Jobs’ death in 2011 the two had a better relationship.
But this film nearly didn’t happen thanks in part to Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs’ widow. People who were close to Jobs have leveled the same criticism against this film that they lobbed at Isaacson’s biography, claiming that these portraits of Jobs paint him in a cruel light. The other, revealed during a tandem interview with Boyle the day after “Jobs” had its gala screening at the New York Film Festival, comes down to another kind of convenience.
Ive’s hackles have been raised by Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs and Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: the Man in the Machine which have depicted the Apple icon as a cutthroat businessman who could be ruthless to his own employees.
“We are a progressive nation in our hearts and a tolerant and I think magnificent one actually. we try to show that in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games”.
Really, though, with this cast and those guys in charge, Steve Jobs is like the 1992 Olympic Men’s basketball team with Michael Jordan – the Dream Team. “And that’s when I knew there was a point of friction that I absolutely wanted to write about”.
“I think Mark invented something that he needed, whether he knew it or not”, said Sorkin.
“I’ve got no problem [with that]”, he said.
