Steve Rogers won’t be Captain America anymore
Directorial duo Joe and Anthony Russo reveal in the extras for the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War” home entertainment release (quotes via Entertainment Weekly) the direction the film might have taken if the “Civil War” storyline had not panned out.
“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity”, Joseph told the Huffington Post.
As is par for the course, fans are already speculating what this means for the future of Steve Rogers and Captain America.
Civil War didn’t end like its comic book namesake as Steve Rogers is still alive and kicking, but one thing they do have in common is that the titular hero no longer carries that name. When Cap fights Iron Man in Civil War, it’s because Tony Stark, although filled with rage and anger, is still making a conscious decision, and that’s far more rewarding for the audience.
“Civil War”, Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang a.k.a. “It nearly like zombifies them – but not literally”. Captain America and Iron Man’s factions were split apart by the Sokovia Accords and the fate of the Winter Soldier.
According to a report from Variety, Diesel made the announcement in front of his viewers as he was streaming a live video on Facebook, stating “Now, the Guardians will be included in “Avengers: Infinity War” and that’s incredibly exciting”.
It turns out a large part of that down to the feeling on set- these are some very silly superheroes as you can see from this gag reel. Cap will of course be back for Avengers: Infinity War, because a civilian Steve Rogers action figure doesn’t sell almost as well as a star-spangled Avenger does. That was the physical challenge that Cap and company would have had to face. “And there would have been the emotional component of that”. “That’s really how Spider-Man came about”, Russo said.
“Time will make clear the connection between the films and how they’re different”, Joe says.
After Robert Downey Jr. signed his new deal, they nixed the Madbomb concept, which was later used in the Season 1 finale of ABC’s Agent Carter. This fight would examine Cap’s psyche, and tackle his ability to handle turning his own powers and abilities on the American public to get the job done.
Captain America: Civil War releases in Digital HD on September 2nd, 2016 and on Blu-ray/DVD on September 13th, 2016.
