Steven Finn ruled out for rest of England tour of South Africa
Broad’s figures of 6-17 included an electrifying spell when he scooped up five wickets for just one run, leaving the shellshocked hosts in complete disarray.
England lead the series 1-0 after victory in the first test by 241 run.
Dane Vilas has been left out of the South African squad for the Centurion Test.
The defeat will topple South Africa from top spot on the International Cricket Council’s Test rankings when the points are adjusted after the series.
“He said that if we wanted to win the series then this was the time to grab this opportunity and luckily he (Broad) did it”, said Cook.
Broad took eight for 15 in just 9.3 overs as he made the most of cloudy overhead conditions with a stunning display of swing bowling.
Van Zyl was caught at gully. Hashim Amla has quit Test captaincy and AB de Villiers is mulling retirement from the longer format. Temba Bavuma (0) became Broad’s fifth victim when he tried to evade a lifting delivery, but only succeeded in gloving the ball on to his stumps.
“I didn’t see Trueman and didn’t watch much of Beefy live, so you have to judge it on who you’ve seen bowl”. It offered good movement in the air and off the deck and good bounce.
Broad said he had been frustrated by his bowling in the first innings. “But I came back here with the Lions determined to play to my best and show I’m still ready if they need me”.
“Through the whole of the Ashes series last summer we took some great catches and won the series and those catches have really helped us win the game today”.
Nick Compton departed next for a duck, Elgar again producing the goods for the Proteas, while Chris Morris had the last say with the ball removing Cook for 43. Although De Villiers himself denied his retirement rumours during the first Test but he did mention that he wants to lessen the workload. “That’s where we missed a trick”.
“We’ve got guys showing glimpses of form but give them a bit more time and they are going to fly”.
“The best players look to make big hundreds; scores of 60 or 70 are not good enough for them”.
Fingers crossed for Finn’s sake that the decision to rest him for the fourth and final test is a precaution – one granted to Bayliss by winning the series with a test to spare.
