Steven Gerrard believes Barcelona are forcing Philippe Coutinho to leave Liverpool
Coutinho did not feature in Liverpool’s season opener against Watford with a back injury ruling him out of the trip to Vicarage Road.
It was reported that Barcelona have twice approached Liverpool regarding the transfer of Coutinho and both times they had to face rejection.
But Liverpool’s US-based owners, Fenway Sports Group, insisted in a statement on Friday that Coutinho will not be allowed to leave Anfield at any price.
Neville said: “You are talking about 18 or 19 days of distraction and disruption to clubs who have worked hard all summer to try and get the pre-season correct”.
“I’m not involved. I think Jurgen’s got it under control, I think FSG have got it under control, and they’re the key”.
“I can say something that is maybe a more important thing”.
Marco Silva has explained that he left club-record signing Andre Gray out of Watford’s starting XI to face Liverpool on Saturday because the striker is still getting used to the club’s style of football.
“We’re not a selling club so they’re going to do everything in their power for him to stay”.
“I can not change it. We need to offer it behind with his speed, not always but if we do it it is easier for us to play football”.
It remains to be seen if there will be further developments on Coutinho’s future before Liverpool take on Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League play-off round clash on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for him, Miguel Britos scored an nearly identical goal to Watford’s first in the dying moments of the game, earning his side a valuable point as the game ended 3-3.
Klopp said: “I don’t make the decision”.
The Brazil global responded by issuing a transfer request but manager Jurgen Klopp said the timing meant the move was out of the question. “If you want to sum it up to this, then only you saw it that we had problems with set pieces”. In defence an injury to Nathaniel Clyne could pave the way for Trent Alexander-Arnold who will be making just his third Premier League start.
