Steven Gerrard confirms he will not return to Liverpool
Although he says winning the MLS Cup is his target in America, nothing can make up for the pain of failing to lift the title in his home country, with his famous slip against Chelsea at the end of the 2013-14 season costing Liverpool badly in his final shot at glory. It’s brilliant we have Steven in the United States market, he’s been such a great servant to Liverpool and for him to be here – hopefully telling people how great the club is, if they don’t already know.
English footballers playing in the MLS, including ex-professional David Beckham, have been loaned to European clubs in the past, but Gerrard has no plans to do that.
“They have been perceived well but it’s not easy”. The players will tell you – and I think Steven has spoken about it openly – it’s quite hard. Prior to his move to Los Angeles, the 35-year-old midfielder spent all of his career with Liverpool, appearing in more than 500 games and becoming a Reds legend in the process.
The USA’s leading goalscorer added: “The Premier League is probably the fastest in the world but the pace [in the US] is faster than you realise”.
“A lot of people talk about the MLS, about the level, but for me a lot of them are wrong”.
After the 2015 campaign ended prematurely for both Gerrard and Lampard, each have spoken openly about the issues Donovan raised.
In a pre-match press conference before Saturday’s evening kick-off against Manchester City, Klopp confirmed he had spoken to Gerrard during the midfielder’s short stay but said that he had not trained with the first team. Unfortunately, since clubs can only begin to purchase players starting the 1st of January of next year, most of the players are only able to be on loan these next few months.
The issue I have is that how is that the word must surely be getting around now about the different factors present in MLS compared to the top leagues in Europe. It’s always been that way and will always remain that way. Gerrard doesn’t have the experience to be coaching a first-team anyway.
