Steven Gerrard ‘Dreamed’ of Seeing Jose Mourinho Manage Liverpool
Speaking to the BBC’s Football Focus programme, the LA Galaxy midfielder explained: “I never, ever regretted representing Liverpool”. “I was the captain”.
For Chelsea fans over by the jukebox, envisioning Mourinho in charge of another Premier League side is a hard thought to swallow- although many stated they’d trade him up for someone else immediately if the Blues are to continue their poor run of form.
Gerrard famously turned down the opportunity to work with Mourinho at Chelsea, in favour of staying loyal to his boyhood club.
Gerrard went on to add, “The dream for me would have been if Mourinho would have come and maybe sampled Liverpool for a few years”.
He came closest to winning that in 2014, but the Reds faltered in their third to last game of the season, losing at home to Chelsea to hand the initiative back to eventual champions Manchester City.
“I scored a couple of goals and got an assist and my general play was on the money that day”.
Gerrard makes a point, this “good fit” elsewhere has meant that Mourinho has won the domestic league at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, not forgetting his first Champions League title in 2004 with Porto followed by another in 2010 with Inter.
With Mourinho’s pedigree, just once things might have been different.
Gerrard, who lifted the prestigious European trophy with Liverpool in 2005, says he would love to see an English team in the competition decider, but wants the world’s two best players to slug it out in the final. “It was one of the best days I had in a Liverpool shirt”.
