Steven Moffat Teases Doctor Who Series 9 in SFX
“You must never trust Doctor Who, because his knowledge of the past and the future is comprehensive and deep and not quite human”, he revealed during his press interview on set with Digital Spy.
Since the previous “Doctor Whos” are portrayed by white men, some believe that it should be possible that there is a spot for a woman for such a role to promote diversity. In the last season of Who, we discovered definitely that when Time Lords like the Doctor “regenerate” (aka get a new body instead of dying) they can get a new body that’s either male or female (the Doctor’s nemesis The Master showed up as “Missy” last season).
We’re only one month away from the Series 9 premiere. Her lead role in Marvel’s Agent Carter – as the smart, tough, feminist super agent Peggy Carter – is a pretty great audition for the part too (if a bit violent). When this topic comes up, inevitably fans ask the question: “What about a woman?” Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren was the biggest advocate of such an appointment, even going as far as to say that she wanted a “gay, black, female” Time Lord. Most recently, a fan at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con posed the question to him, which, according to Vulture, he expertly dodged. I think the next time might be a female Doctor. If you’re not reading the subtext, then I’ll lend you.
While his answer wasn’t a definite “no”, he has said in the past that he neither wants to be the champion of the idea nor the one that shuts it down.
Spectators will just have to await the response from the series’ showrunner Steven Moffat to make his decision.
