Stevie Wonder Brought The Grammys House Down With His Braille Gags
“So, I’m gonna break this open, pop it open – you know”.
Wonder also presented the Grammy for Song of the Year which afforded him the opportunity to play a little trick on the audience. “Na-na-na-na-na-na”, Wonder taunted the crowd as he opened the envelope to announce the victor. Damn. OK, so, all you can’t read this, huh?
Recording artist Stevie Wonder (C) and the Pentatonix perform onstage during The 58th GRAMMY Awards at Staples Center on February 15, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.
“We need to make every single thing accessible to every person with a disability”, Wonder concluded. “You can’t read this you can’t read braille, na na na na na!”
Before introducing the victor of Song of the Year Grammy, Wonder teamed with the acappella group with Pentatonix to provide a pitch-perfect tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire co-founder Maurice White, who died four days ago. “Nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah!” Wonder said, laughing.
The victor – Ed Sheeran, for “Thinking Out Loud” – was written in braille, and Wonder took a moment to heighten the suspense. Others in the lineup include Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Little Big Town, Lady Gaga, The Hollywood Vampires, the Hamilton cast and more.
