Stone has 39 and 12 to lift No. 4 Terps
Maryland freshman Diamond Stone scored a career-high 39 points to help the No. 4 Terrapins rally past Penn State 70-64 at home on Wednesday.
Stone set a Maryland freshman record with 39 points and 12 rebounds against the Nittany Lions. Stone attempted a single-season Maryland record 25 free throws on the night.
Jaysean Paige scored 17 points and Jonathan Holton contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds for West Virginia, which opened a three-game road trip that stretches into Big 12 play.
After falling behind by eight at halftime – Maryland’s largest halftime deficit of the season – and later by 13 with a little over 61/2 minutes left, Stone led the Terps to a wild 70-64 victory.
Turgeon was quick to point out that the media and the fans – and maybe even a few of his players – might have taken for granted that the Terps could just walk out on the floor at Xfinity Center and sweep a team like Penn State out of the arena.
Melo Trimble hits Diamond Stone with a pass and then slams down a monster dunk. Carter drained a three-pointer with 34 seconds left to extend the lead to five and essentially put the win on ice.
“He (Stone) was terrific”, coach Mark Turgeon said.
Maryland would end the half shooting zero percent from beyond the arc, and 18 percent overall from the field. That further exacerbated in the contrast in free throw attempts: Maryland took 38, Penn State just 16.
Overall it was a great performance for a Penn State team that looked completely overmatched on paper.
Gill led the Cavaliers (11-1) with 17 points, Mike Tobey had 16, and Malcolm Brogdon 12.
The Nittany Lions remained in control and a pair of free throws by Garner in the closing seconds provided a 31-23 lead at the break. Led by Payton Banks’ major rebounding and Garner’s key scoring, business was booming as the lead widened and widened. We’re going to make another one.’ You have to figure out ways to score, so to start the second half, we shot all layups and got to the rim.
The experience gained in the 74-67 win helped the Buckeyes settle down after blowing a 15-point lead against Minnesota on Wednesday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
The Terps did start off the game on the right foot.
Holding a one-point advantage early in the second half, the Buckeyes (9-5) pulled away for a 78-63 victory behind Marc Loving’s 20 points and 13 assists from freshman guard JaQuan Lyle.
