Stooges saxophonist Steve Mackay dies
Steve Mackay has died aged 66 following surgery [Wenn].
In his Facebook post, Pop had described Mackay as “a classic ’60’s American guy, who was full of generosity and love for anyone he met”.

“Steve was always an important part of our band’s live sound, and a year ago I worked with him again when he played on a couple of songs on my solo album”. He had been touring with the group since their reformation in 2003.
He also played on The Stooges’ 2007 album The Weirdness and 2013’s Ready to Die and was a guest on many other artists’ albums. In the ’70s, he formed a new version of Carnal Kitchen with his wife, singer/bassist Annie Garcia-Mackay. Mackay had been in critical condition at a California hospital with the life-threatening infection, which can lead to multiple organ failure. He left the Stooges the same year, but reunited with the group in 2003, for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and continued to perform with them until his death. “It was all his own”.
The Stooges’ guitarist, Ron Asheton, passed away in 2009, while the band’s drummer, Asheton’s brother Scott, died past year.
Mackay additionally collaborated with bands such as the Violent Femmes, Snakefinger, Sonny Vincent, Mike Watt and R. Stevie Moore, among others.
