Stoops: Baker Mayfield to play against Oklahoma State
Coach Bob Stoops says Monday that the Heisman hopeful checked out well the past two days, and plans called for him to do light work at practice.
Mayfield was hit hard in the back of the helmet by TCU linebacker Ty Summers during the second quarter of last week’s 30-29 win over the Horned Frogs. The hit came early in the first half.
Turns out, the girlfriend of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is a former Oklahoma State women’s soccer player and a die-hard Cowboys fan who isn’t letting her relationship get in the way of cheering for the “Pokes” on Saturday. He passed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-20 completions. He also was sacked three times, finding himself scrambling from a heavy TCU pass rush on a number of plays in the opening half.
That loss could still be a huge factor in how the College Football Playoff committee views Oklahoma if the Sooners manage to claim the Big 12 championship with a win November 28 at Oklahoma State.
“We were just hanging on for dear life”, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said.
On one play, it was win or go home, more than one Oklahoma player said afterward. I haven’t given up on TJ, and I hope he gets a chance Friday to redeem himself.
In the second half, backup quarterback Trevor Knight was ineffective – 5-for-16 for 76 yards – allowing TCU to key on the running game.
TCU coach Gary Patterson defended his decision to go for the win.
The Sooners still seemed to be in control most of the way with a defense that kept the Horned Frogs contained.
Mayfield played the rest of the half, but was pulled at halftime after he reported having a headache.
The Sooners tallied 333 yards on the ground as well as a score, led by Samaje Perine who had 188 yards on 26 carries. The touchdown pushed Oklahoma ahead 30-13 with 7:55 left in the third quarter. We’ll all discuss and debate them, parsing chairman Jeff Long’s phrases to glean hidden meaning and arguing who should be in and out.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has shown signs since his concussion that he could be ready for Saturday’s pivotal game against Oklahoma State. Foster will need to be much better if he wants to beat out Kenny Hill this spring for the starting job in 2016 – he stared down his first read for an eternity, he was jittery and indecisive, and the hang time has already been mentioned – but he’s seeing his first significant action and that’s to be expected. “He’s our leader. He inspires us all, in a lot of ways”.
