Storm Could Leave Close to a Foot of Snow in New England
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Rhode Island starting Thursday night and lasting into Friday afternoon.
Family members say a 6-year-old girl who was hit by a falling tree limb that fell in her backyard during the snowstorm has died. The child was rushed to a hospital and police took to Twitter to warn town residents to stay indoors.
Temperatures are hovering around freezing, making for wet, heavy snow, of the sort that’s good for snowmen, but bad for power lines.
The storm is expected to drop as much as 10 inches on some areas of the Northeast.
BOSTON (AP) New England is digging out from its first big snowfall of the season that dumped more than a foot in some places and left tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power, as forecasters eye another potential winter storm early next week.
She says because the island typically gets less snow, they’re able to manage it more easily.
Rain will change to snow overnight before diminishing to flurries around mid-morning Friday.
Public schools in Boston are cancelled Friday due to the impending snowstorm, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation says they’re expecting a “problematic” morning commute.
After spring-like weather most of this week, a blast of winter weather arrived Friday that could set the stage for a more significant coastal storm next Tuesday – the same day as the New Hampshire Primary.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority reported that a section of the heavily-traveled Green Line between Boston and suburban Newton was shut down in both directions after a tree fell across the tracks.
“For kind of the eastern, southern part of Rhode Island, away from the coastline especially, anywhere from three to six inches is possible”, said Doody.
The power company, formerly NSTAR, had about 3,000 customers report power outages in Framingham just before 10 a.m., according to company spokesperson Rhiannon D’Angelo.
The storm is expected to peter out in the afternoon.
The National Weather Service said Worcester, Massachusetts saw 12.5 inches of snow, Boston got almost 7, Providence, Rhode Island 5 and Hartford, Connecticut, more than 6. Snowfall amounts are expected to be lower in southeastern and western parts of the state. Many school districts in the region…
“What people are seeing out their windows [at home] is the best conditions of the day, ” Tinlin said in a telephone interview around 6:30 a.m. “This isn’t going to be a Currier and Ives, New England picturesque snow-scene by any means”.
