Storm Florence: The impact in numbers
The death toll climbed to at least seven. This comes a day after 90 miles per hour winds and torrential rain came down on North Carolina, making rivers rise to record levels.
Two other rain collection locations for NOAA are approaching the 1999 mark as well – Newport/Morehead City is at 23.75 inches and Emerald Isle is at 23.66 inches. Flooding also hit the Bogue Sound near Beaufort, the Pungo River at Belhaven and the Pamlico River at Washington.
“I can not overstate it: Floodwaters are rising, and if you aren’t watching for them you are risking your life”, Gov. Roy Cooper said.
A piece of corrugated metal blown by winds from Hurricane Florence just misses a state patrolman as people move a wood and metal structure that was blown onto the roadway, in Florence, South Carolina, on September 14, 2018. The price tag on the rebuild efforts for areas devastated by storm surge, which was expected to reach as high as 20 feet in some areas, was still impossible to quantify. Almost 900,000 homes and businesses were without power in the Carolinas early on Friday, utility officials said.
The flooding in both affected coastal states will continue in the coming days as Florence continues to work its way into the mainland from the coast.
“You evacuate from water”, Cline said.
Authorities on Saturday warned residents displaced by a killer hurricane that its devastation was far from over, as Florence dumped “epic amounts of rainfall” across the eastern United States, bringing catastrophic flooding.
Despite the predictability of low-income communities being hit hardest by natural disasters, it remains a documented phenomenon that the national news media largely turns a blind eye to the devastation being wrought in poor neighborhoods.
Not everyone was taking Florence too seriously: About two dozen locals gathered Thursday night behind the boarded-up windows of The Barbary Coast bar as Florence blew into Wilmington. About 400 people have been rescued. Mackie rode in a boat through a flooded neighbourhood, navigating through trees and past a fencepost to get to the Knox house. “I have no idea”. “That’s why we’ve been preaching to people that you have to get away from the water”.
The Philippines tends to get hit almost every year, the Carolinas far less frequently though with lots of close calls, Maue said.
A mother and her eight-month-old baby were killed Friday when a tree fell on a house, according to a tweet from police in Wilmington, N.C. The father was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities in SC reported one death, saying a woman was killed when her vehicle struck a fallen tree. “Dangerous storm surge could also affect portions of the northeast coast of SC coast today”.
Rainfall enough to cause major flooding could occur in part of northern Georgia, eastern Tennessee and perhaps southern West Virginia. Mike Doll, Senior Meteorologist at Accuweather said the winds will continue to slow down over the weekend and the main problem moving forward will be flooding due to heavy rains. That’s enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay, or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches of water.
