Storm in a Y-front as protest hits Rio wrestling
Mongolian wrestler Mandakhnaran Ganzorig thought he had won his bronze medal match against Ikhtiyor Navruzov 7-6 at 65 kilograms with ten seconds to go and so began to celebrate.
The Mongolian coaches challenged the ruling at the end of the match, and when the decision wasn’t changed, one stripped off his jacket and shirt, throwing them emphatically into the mat.
Navruzov embraces his coach, who body-slams him in celebration, while Ganzorig falls to his knees writhing, his face buried in his hands.
Two coaches for the Mongolian national team made a decision to get (mostly) naked after their fighter lost a controversial bronze medal match.
A controversial penalty point at the 65kg bronze wrestling bout resulted in two coaches stripping on the mat.
When the Mongolian coaches realized what had happened, they erupted.
The other coach, Tsenrenbataar Tsostbayar, stripped all the way down to his blue underwear. His opponent was Ikhtiyor Navruzov of Uzbekistan in this match.
Unfortunately for the Mongolian team the protest didn’t lead to any change in the result but it certainly grabbed headlines around the world.
With the crowd erupting and chanting “MONGOLIA! 3 million people in Mongolia waited for this bronze medal and now we have no medal”.
Instead, the officials gave two points to Navruzov and none to Gomez – sparking outrage from fans after the replay was shown. “The referees are no good”. “They only supported the Uzbek”, Bayaraa said, according to the Wall Street Journal. “MONGOLIA!” one of them then took off his track trousers and remonstrated with the judges wearing nothing but a pair of trunks. In wrestling, the competitor who scores the final point of a tie match is the victor, so in a flash, Ganzorig went from victory to defeat.
