Storm Jonas: White House dogs frolic in the snow as clean-up begins
Commander Scott Kelly and the crew of the International Space Station had such a view this morning, and Kelly took a few pics of Winter Storm Jonas from their position. But the 17.8 inches of snow that fell at Reagan National Airport was just the fourth highest on record in Washington, Susan Buchanan, acting director of public affairs at the NWS, told CNSNews.com in an email.
In terms of snow totals, parts of West Virginia got more than 40 inches, NYC got around 30 inches and Philadelphia finished the storm with around 22 inches of snow.
Thirteen people were killed in weather-related vehicle crashes, four while shoveling snow, and two died of hypothermia. Jonas dropped 18 inches of snow on portions of the state, according to the Associated Press.
This was nearly the exact opposite of winter storm Juno, which swept feebly through New York City nearly exactly one year ago.
In Pulaski County, National Weather Service totals ranged from 11 inches at New River Valley Airport to 14 inches from a trained spotter in Pulaski. The storm also dumped almost three feet of snow onto the nation’s capital. At least 23 other people died from the snowstorm in other states, including Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Metro trains were scheduled to begin limited service starting at 7 a.m. Monday, after being shut down all Sunday.
