“Straight Outta Compton” Is Getting a Sequel
The N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton has become a huge box office success for Universal. The good news is that “Sinister 2” cost less than $10 million to make.
Thursday night preview screenings generated less-than-stellar numbers for the trio of openers with “Sinister 2” with $850,000, “Hitman: Agent 47” with $600,000 and “American Ultra” with $425,000.
Another holdover, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, now in its fourth week, looks likely to beat all three newcomers this weekend to take the No. 2 spot. The original, released by Summit in 2012, starred Ethan Hawke and got off to an $18 million start on its way to $48 million domestically and $77 million worldwide. Rounding out the top five: Spy caper The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with $7.4 million ($26.6 million total).
In addition, the American-German action thriller film “Hitman: Agent 47“, starring Homeland’s Rupert Friend as an elite assassin, is estimated to gross some eight million US dollars during the weekend.
And by “sinister elements” I mean a history of beating the shit of women, which old mate seemed to have a bit of a problem with during the 90s, with former music host Dee Barnes penning this piece for Gawker in which she calls out producers of Straight Outta Compton, for excluding the time she was horribly beaten by Dre in the movies storyline. The comedy, which stars Eisenberg as a stoner who discovers he was programmed as a secret agent, also received a B- Cinemascore.
As of August 20, the year-to-date box office is 6% ahead of last year at $7.35 billion and 0.3% ahead of 2013, according to Rentrak. It earned over USD 60 million on the debut weekend and has so far garnered more than USD 80 million against a budget of USD 29 million.
In limited release, Sony Classics’ family dramedy “Grandma” starring Lily Tomlin drives into four cinemas in Los Angeles and New York before expanding to about 200 more venues through October.
