‘Straight Outta Compton’ Tops Friday as New Additions Stumble
Though the film dropped 56% from its opening weekend, it added an estimated $26.75 million, bringing its domestic haul to $111.5 million to date. With that, Straight Outta Compton becomes the fastest movie to $100 million by an African-American filmmaker which is an interesting counterpoint to Gray’s earlier film The Italian Job, which took 15 weeks to hit that amount. Dr. Dre’s son, Curtis Young, is said to fill his father’s shoes in the film and all new actors will be plucked to play Ice Cube and Snoop. “I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives”.
Despite the release of three new movies in wide release, Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation starring Tom Cruise, remained in second place with $11.7 million, down 32% as it has grossed $158 million domestically in its first month. The R-rated film fell slightly short of expectations but made $10.6 million, enough to nab the No. 3 spot.
Fox’s assassin thriller “Hitman: Agent 47”, the second attempt in eight years to adapt the popular video game, disappointed with $8.2 million. Starring Rupert Friend as a genetically modified killer, the actioner carries a $35 million pricetag; it’s unlikely to reach the heights of the 2007 original’s haul of $39.7 million.
Finishing the weekend in sixth place will be stoner action-comedy “American Ultra”, on its way to a $5 million-$6 million weekend total after pulling in $2 million in Friday receipts.
In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics debuted “Grandma” with $120,856 in just four theaters, a per-location average of $30,214. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
