The man who killed five people in a shooting Friday at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has been identified by authorities as 26-year-old Esteban Santiago.
A military spokeswoman told the AP that Santiago was discharged from the Alaska Army National Guard a year ago for unsatisfactory performance.
As of 5 p.m. Friday, five flights between Orlando and Fort Lauderdale were canceled, and 13 planes were diverted from the South Florida airport to OIA.
“Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack”, Piro said.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has been closed indefinitely, with no flights arriving or departing.
Maria Cedeño, a Broward County resident who had just gotten off a Delta flight from Atlanta, told The Record that she took refuge in a Terminal 2 bathroom, where she said two armed female officers from the Sheriff’s Department carrying guns and flashlights were looking around.
It is legal for airline passengers to travel with guns and ammunition as long as the firearms are kept in a locked, hard-sided container as checked baggage.
Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Marlin Ritzman defended not putting Mr Santiago on a no-fly list after the incident. Officials are expected to file charges against him later Saturday.
Lauderdale’s global airport that has reportedly left multiple people dead. Investigators are combing through social media and other sources to determine Santiago’s motive. He is reported to have said he was hearing imaginary voices, some of them telling him to join the terrorist group Islamic State.
He was turned over to local police who took him to a medical facility for a mental evaluation. It’s unclear what happened after that assessment.
“We don’t know a motive at this point”, Mr Nelson said. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Friday night it appears the gunman acted alone.
Scott says three are still in intensive care. The rampage sparked pandemonium and shut down the airport.
FLL handles 80-100,000 passengers on a typical day, director Mark Gale told reporters.
Previously, a spokeswoman from the Canadian Embassy says the suspect in the shooting at the global airport in Fort Lauderdale has no connection to the country and did not fly to Florida from there.
At 2:26pm Eastern time, more shots were reported at the parking garage in Terminal 1, and there was police activity in other terminals previously unaffected by the shooting at Terminal 2.
Officials from Sanford airport said their operations are functioning normally.
