Streaming service Netflix leads in Golden Globes nominations
Netflix is leading the charge in Golden Globe nominations, with HBO and Stars following at a close second.
One thing hasn’t changed about the Hollywood Foreign press, comprised of some 70 to 80 reporters from far flung places, which is that they love big movie stars and they love to party with them on their one big night. While the film categories saw a good mix of nominees from major and independent film studios, the television groups saw a noticeable lack of nominees from major television networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, nominees that usually dominate the awards season.
“Veep” earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Vanity Fair writer Julie Miller applauded the 69-year-old’s nomination, highlighting critics calling Stallone’s on-screen role in “Creed” “his most complex and moving yet”.
The nominees for best motion picture comedy or musical are The Martian, Trainwreck, The Big Short, Joy, and Spy.
The SAG and Globe nominations this week sent the Hollywood awards season into full gear, with Tinseltown headed for the Oscars on February 28.
Eddie Redmayne – Nominee for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama “The Danish Girl”: “I am incredibly grateful to the HFPA for having included me in such a brilliant troupe of actors”.
Actress Lily Tomlin, who has been making a comeback at age 76, was nominated for best actress in a comedy for “Grace and Frankie”.
The nominees were revealed Thursday, and the winners will be announced at a televised ceremony in Los Angeles on January 10.
Besides the “Carol” stars, the other actresses in this category are Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl” and Brie Larson for “Room”.
Kate Winslet, best supporting actress for “Steve Jobs”: “I am completely over the moon and feel so honoured to be nominated for a Golden Globe by the HFPA for this film”.
Netflix’s Narcos and Orange is the New Black got two nominations each, while House of Cards, Frank and Gracie and Master of None each received a nod, as did Netflix’s first feature film, Beasts of No Nation. Along with Elba and Rylance, the supporting-actor category was rounded out by Paul Dano (Love & Mercy) and Michael Shannon (99 Homes).
Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold. And he went on to receive Oscar nominations in both categories.
The Golden Globes have typically had a pretty loose definition of “comedy” when it comes to the movie nominations. Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board. Unlike the Emmys, the Globes actually like to nominate freshmen series and these veterans were shoved aside to make way for newer, buzzier, fare like USA’s “Mr. Robot” and Netflix’s “Narcos”.
SURPRISE: Lady Gaga, “American Horror Story” No offense to Gaga’s glam turn as a vampy seductress on the most gonzo installment to date of FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story”, but awards buzz for her work hasn’t exactly been deafening. Time Warner TWX -owned HBO received multiple nominations across both awards shows for their series Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, and Veep.
