Student Banned From Wearing Black Lives Matter T-Shirt
A group chanting “Black Lives Matter” attacked and robbed seven white men near the University of Akron, before running away.
The rally comes just a week after the groupshut down traffic at Yonge-Dundas to announce a list of demands for the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in their investigation into the case.
They also demanded Minister of Health Eric Hoskins launch an investigation into how the Ottawa hospital and paramedics handled Abdi’s death.
According to this CP24 article, protestors are angry about the death of Somali-Canadian man Abdirahman Abdi, who died last month after a violent arrest outside his apartment building in Ottawa. Rarely do its investigations result in the convictions of police officers.
Mounting pressure from BLM Toronto and other activists prompted Ontario’s then attorney-general Madeleine Meilleur to release in April 10 pages of the SIU’s report into the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Andrew Loku by Toronto police.
Later Wednesday, Black Lives Matter will hold rallies across the country, including in Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Kitchener, Thunder Bay, and Sudbury.
Police say a group of five black men and two white men approached a group of seven white men and began shouting, “Black lives matter”.
BLM Toronto is demanding that charges be laid against the two Ottawa police officers involved in the altercation.
