Student seriously burned after phone charger explodes through the night and
EE say they are investigating as a matter of urgency after Katy Emslie woke up at 1am on Friday to “smoky soot in the air” and a “firework noise”.
A STUDENT was left with serious burns after her portable phone charger exploded and set her bedroom ablaze.
She said: “I was charging my EE power bar through my Mac computer overnight and at I was woken up by something which sounded like a firework around 1pm”. The next thing she remembers was sing flames underneath her bed.
‘I was screaming for my mum who was in the next room, I tried patting the flames out with my hand because I was anxious that the fire could spread underneath and set my bed alight.
“I panicked because there was actual flames as opposed to embers”, she told the BBC’s Newsbeat.
“My mum came through, grabbed a towel and put the flames out and I ran through and put my hand under cold water”. I was terrified because I thought it was going to either burn through the floor or catch fire onto the bed. “It could have landed on my bed and I might not even be here”.
She was “gutted” she will no longer be able to run in Tough Mudder, the annual hardcore obstacle race, because of her injuries.
“Hopefully my hand will heal but it’s pretty much blistered on every finger and on my palm as well”.
Ms Emslie, a 26-year-old medical student (pictured), was taken to A&E where medics spent hours treating her burns.
A spokeswoman for EE said: “We’re sorry to hear about Ms Emslie’s experience. We’re in touch with the customer and are investigating as a matter of urgency”.
