Students fall in after having food at a Chipotle outlet in Boston
As it seems that the investigation in this regard will take a few more days and then only it can be confirmed that whether the outburst of Norovirus is centered on Chipotle Restaurant near Boston College. The first cases were reported at the end of October in OR and Washington, with additional cases being reported later.
Diverting from the recent cases of E. coli sickness related with Chipotle restaurants, these students had in fact contacted norovirus and not the E. Coli infection as everyone had initially suspected. In this message, Ells said, “This was a very unfortunate incident, and I’m deeply sorry that this happened”. The company is now suffering a major blow to its reputation as different locations have been associated with virus outbreaks. Illness cases linked to E. coli outbreak are rising, shares of the company are dropping and people are avoiding its restaurants. Chipotle has approximately 1900 outlets spread all across the United States. The gastrointestinal crisis has also taken a heavy toll on Chipotle’s prospects of regaining public confidence after the massive food safety failures that hit the 1, 900-strong burrito chain. “We can not confirm a cause of the illness at this time, but we are coordinating with Boston public health officials to determine the cause”.
Public health authorities in Boston, Massachusetts force a temporary closure of Chipotle restaurant after receiving multiple food poisoning complaints from Boston College basketball players.
Locally sourced produce accounts for a “relatively small percentage” of the produce the chain uses, said Chris Arnold, a Chipotle spokesman. Stephen Anderson, an analyst at investment bank and wealth manager Maxim Group, said the Boston illnesses are a “near-term negative reinforcement” when viewed along with the E. coli outbreak and other health-related issues Chipotle has dealt with since the summer. Despite Ells’ apology, the restaurant chain’s stock prices have tanked.
Chipotle hasn’t identified the source of latest E. coli infection.
As for just what Ells means by “doing a lot to rectify” the situation, he explained that the company is now implementing new food safety and testing practices that will put it “10 to 15 years ahead of industry” standards.
By the end of the week, 129 BC students contracted norovirus from the restaurant, as well as seven people not associated with the college, according to the commission.
