Manager David Moyes insists it is business as usual for him and the Sunderland players amid ongoing speculation over the potential sale of the club. They’ve both improved but they’ve quite often been doing double training sessions because if we’re going to have any chance of staying up, we need our centre-halves to play well. But patience paid off.
However, Jermain Defoe then added a second with a little over 10 minutes to go, firing home from close range after Watmore’s shot had been blocked. Superb scenes. The Stadium of Light was rocking once again.
Jermain Defoe grabbed Sunderland’s second goal in the 77th minute and although Japan striker Shinji Okazaki reduced the deficit three minutes later, the hosts held on for a third win in their last four league games.
It’s a remarkable turnaround. “It was nice that it worked out this way and we could help the team win”.
Sunderland are only three points off 13th, with arguably now eight teams involved in the relegation scrap, from Crystal Palace down.
Anything from the games against Chelsea and Manchester United would be a bonus.
Another steadying presence who has returned from a lengthy knee lay-off is midfielder Seb Larsson.
– Robert Huth put through his own net for the first time since the opening day of the 2008-2009 Premier League season (Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur).
It was fitting that Sunderland broke the deadlock through the two men returning from long injury layoffs.
Leicester, the defending champions, have struggled to recapture last season’s form but still had a threat with some fine attacking talent. The victory at Bournemouth on Bonfire Night sparked them back to life and has really given everyone the confidence that results can be achieved. Having failed to make the most of their impressive start, Sunderland began to look nervous and Islam Slimani was denied a goal by a block from Papy Djilobodji. Defoe did what he does best. Even though the performance merited more, we left Liverpool empty-handed.
“The guys on the pitch did a great job, Jason [Denayer] was magnificent in central midfield and Didier Ndong and Steven Pienaar too”.
