Stunned Chargers have to regroup quickly as Packers await
Vick and Antonio Brown still haven’t developed much chemistry.
In their previous game, against the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers refused to give the ball to Le’Veon Bell to win during overtime.
Vick’s 72-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Markus Wheaton pulled the Steelers into a 17-17 tie. Antwon Blake made one of the biggest plays of the game, though, intercepting Rivers and taking it 70 yards to the house (now, if only Blake could learn to tackle).
The NFL can not have a rooting interest in which team wins each game, but they have to be breathing a sigh of relief that the Steelers were able to come from behind in the closing seconds on Monday Night Football to beat the Chargers.
Out of a wildcat formation, to boot! Bell had 89 of his rushing yards in the first half and it would have been nice to see him get the rock even more, but overall it was another solid effort.
Pereira could recall only one issue with a game-clock operator when he was in charge of National Football League officiating: A decade ago, a team asked him to replace its clock person. “I’m glad the offensive coordinator had the faith in me to call the play”. With five seconds left, the Steelers were down by three points with the ball inside the 1. We were talking about it all week. The Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) really needed a decisive win behind backup quarterback Michael Vick as they have been struggling since Ben Roethlisberger went down. Cam Heyward was credited with only one tackle, but was very disruptive and Stephon Tuitt looks better every week. “I don’t think he’s not trying to give me the ball, but he’s new out there and hasn’t been here from spring or training camp”.
Their running game only had 19 carries for 52 yards. That sack forced a 4th and 10 punt by Jordan Berry.
Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said the error “didn’t change the outcome of the game”. “The crowd noise did not affect us at all last night”.
After the Chargers answered with three to retake the lead, the Steelers got screwed. Eighteen seconds ran off the clock after Pittsburgh’s touchback.
“We had an opportunity to win the game and we’re on the road in a hostile environment”. With a few help from Darrius Heyward-Bey, the southpaw completed 4-of-7 passes for 44 yards on the final possession and also had a 24-yard run on a third-and-6 play to get the Steelers inside the 20 with 17 seconds remaining.
“I’m just thankful I had the guts to do it. I’m just thankful [offensive coordinator] Todd [Haley] had the confidence in me to call the game down the stretch the way he would call it for Ben”. He’s not going to take too many shots or shots extra. I don’t want to be overbearing because Mike’s been doing this for a long time and he’s a real pro.
