Sturridge could make Liverpool return tomorrow
Thursday night’s Europa League draw in Bordeaux, combined with last weekend’s defeat at Old Trafford, means that Liverpool are winless in four matches in all competitions.
With pressure mounting on his position as Liverpool manager following a poor start to the Premier League season, he must restore his side’s attacking identity to secure his future-so can his two star forwards, Daniel Sturridge and Christian Benteke, present a solution?
With regard to the scrutiny Liverpool are under and their search for goals and points, Rodgers has emphasised the importance of staying calm.
“It’s about risk-taking as well”. I think it’s a bit unfair at times.
“No disrespect to anyone, but we’ve missed a lot of goals and creativity in our team”.
“The players have been working really hard at that over the last week or so and it only takes that one performance to spin the season around again“.
“It’s been an ongoing issue for a while now, but we will get there like we did before”.
He added: “Daniel will do that”.
Opposite number Alex Neil believes the level of scrutiny on Rodgers is unfair, but is optimistic that his City team can add to Liverpool’s woes. Mamadou Sakho is also way less inconsistent and decent in the backline, so it would make the most sense for him to start instead of Lovren.
For him, it’s just about getting himself back in and playing and getting the goals.
Rodgers is set to recall a number of first team players after resting several of his key men in midweek.
“People always say it’s a good time to play them, we’ll just look at what we do and see where it takes us”. Those types of players like Daniel, with that quality, can give a totally different perspective to your team.
“That momentum has carried on well with them, they’re a good side, he’s managed them really well and adapted well to the club”. But he should be definitely used in smaller games like the one against Norwich, so that he could learn more and more from each game, as he is very young and talented.
“And the reality is we are only a few points off where we’d want to be and there is still a long way to go”.
“Jordan will train today, so we’ll see how he comes through that“, said the Reds manager, remaining cautious in his wording.
Kolo Toure suffered a dead leg against Bordeuax and will miss out along with Allen and Flanagan.
