Successful spacewalk clears way for delivery to space station
Two US astronauts floated outside the International Space Station on Monday in a hastily planned spacewalk to move a stuck rail auto before a Russian cargo ship reaches the outpost on Wednesday, NASA said.
And do share with your family and friends – so they don’t miss out!
Last week, NASA flight controllers uplinked commands to move the robot arm’s mobile transporter, or MT, from work site 4 to work site 2 on the forward face of the station’s long power truss.
Russia, one of 15 nations that own and operate the station, plans to launch a new research laboratory, while the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration is preparing to install docking ports for new commercial space taxis that are slated to begin flying in 2017.
Tim Peake mentioned the prospect of watching the anticipated movie before being ferried to the ISS while Kelly, a “Year in Space” participant, has been peppering his Twitter feed with Star Wars references.
“We’re out when he calls! I’m sorry you’re not in”.
The only answer was to don their extravehicular activity suits, go outside and fix the problem.
Loaded with 5,753 pounds of propellant, supplies and equipment, the Progress is expected to dock at the space station’s Russian Pirs module around 5:31 a.m. Wednesday.
Nigel Peake said that they will have a cardboard cut-out of their son at the Christmas table.
“We’ve now borrowed him so he’s standing in the corner of the room so he’ll be here with us when we carve the turkey”.
Former Chichester High School for Boys pupil Major Peake is the first Briton aboard the space station, and the first fully British professional astronaut employed by a space agency.
‘That was pretty easy, ‘ Commander Kelly said, according to a live broadcast of the spacewalk on Nasa TV.
