Sudanese migrants killed trying to cross into Israel from Egypt
The bodies of six Sudanese migrants who had been shot dead were found in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula near the Israeli border on Monday, security and health officials said.
According to the spokesman, a border guard was injured and five migrants arrested.
Egyptian border forces shot dead five Sudanese migrants trying to cross from Egypt’s turbulent North Sinai region into Israel on Monday, the military said in a statement.
They did not disclose whether security forces or the smugglers shot the migrants, but observers familiar with the situation said they suspected an Egyptian force in command of the area fired at them.
The smugglers then fled, leaving the dead and wounded migrants, who were taken to Rafah hospital for treatment.
They said another eight migrants had been wounded in the November 15 attack.
On Sunday, the Sudanese embassy in Cairo announced it would be sending a fact-finding mission to North Sinai to investigate last week’s incident, according to Anadolu Agency.
“Law enforcement tasked with protecting the border spotted at dawn today a group of Africans trying to sneak though the global border in cooperation with criminal elements involved in illegal immigration”, the military said. In 2012 more than 10,000 crossed the border illegally.
