Suit: Ex-Vols player punched for helping woman in rape case
Bowles – who has since transferred to UT-Chattanooga – also wrote that former Tennessee linebacker Curt Maggitt punched him in the face in the locker room after it came to light he had driven the young woman home from a party.
Sounds to me like there’s a problem with the culture on campus at Tennessee with the football players and Jones is enabling his players while chastising those who are attempting to do the right thing.
The filing also showed that two more unnamed women who say they were sexually assaulted jointed the lawsuit, bringing the total number to eight.
The alleged victim said she was never given notice about any of Pearson’s hearings or the change of status in his suspension. “We feel for them”. “We are constantly educating our players”.
The complaint states Bowles was driving when he noticed a woman “hyperventilating and crying near bushes in the parking lot”. The suit claims her rape was a casual result of UT’s “deliberate indifference and policy decisions to create a hostile sexual involvement”.
Bowles than drove her from the Woodlands Apartment Complex to Volunteer Hall where she was taken to UT Medical Center.
Per the lawsuit, one of the victims claims she witnessed Bowles being “jumped” by Maggitt and other teammates the next day with an athletic coach present, and another altercation is said to have occurred in the team facility. Maggitt angrily confronted Bowles about what happened that same day and allegedly struck Bowles in the face.
Patrick Murphy-Racey/AP “Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go to out to the alleged victims”.
Although the allegations that Bowles was attacked by teammates were in the original complaint filed February 9 in Nashville, the amendment adds details and a signed declaration from Bowles that states the allegations in the suit “are true with respect to the statements and descriptions of events pertaining to me”.
Coach Jones stated to Bowles he was very disappointed in Bowles and that he had “betrayed the team”. He is expected to testify at the trials of both Williams and Johnson, which are scheduled for the summer. “Drae Bowles had acted with the utmost kindness and strength of character toward Jane Doe IV, her friends and Jane Doe V”, the plaintiffs claim in their updated lawsuit.
