Sunburns Trigger Daycare Probe – Myhighplains.com – Powered by KAMR LOCAL 4
The boys suffered second- and third-degree sunburn on a field trip with their day care to the water park in the city of Vinita on Friday, mother Shaunna Oxford told NBC News.
Shaunna Broadway says staff at “Happiness Is A Learning Center” in Vinita, Oklahoma, let her 5- and 7-year-old sons play outside Friday without shirts or sunscreen. Both boys were reportedly crying because large blisters had emerged on their backs and shoulders.
Broadway claims that the boys were outside all day and were not given access to sunscreen.
The graphic photos, which show a boy suffering from severe burns all over his back and chest, were posted with the caption: “This is my nephew”.
“[The employees] were actually making fun of my older son, because both boys got sunburns, but he was being a “baby” and crying about it”, Broadway told BuzzFeed. Within 10 minutes, she was told her sons needed to be life-flighted to Shriner’s Hospital in Galveston, Texas, which has a children’s facility that specializes in burns.
No one answered the phone at The Happiness is a Learning Center, and the center did not return CNN’s phone call.
Two brothers were admitted to the hospital and are expected to be there at least a week after they came home from daycare with second and third degree burns.
“It’s been really hard to see them go through this”, she said. “Remember to use a cool gel or paste, as the coolness also speeds recovery by constricting your skin’s capillaries, which are bringing in the building blocks of pain and inflammation”, she says.
Floyd said the police will also interview other parents and the hospital to determine whether there were elements of child abuse or neglect by the daycare centre.
“To think that a kid could get that burned in the care of a daycare, I have no words”, the single mum said.
The family filed a report with Vinita Police on Sunday and KOTA reported the day care has been cited 19 times for various infractions by the state Department of Human Services over the previous year.
A relative of the boys started a GoFundMe campaign and saw their original page pulled because the photo of the burns was deemed to graphic.
