Sundance Film Festival expected to draw 46000 people over next 10 days
What needed to happen, they asked, for these tragedies to stop? I still love meeting people on the bus, chatting about what films they’ve seen and loved (or hated). As seen in the brand’s recently released short film, directed by Paul Haggis and titled “OUT THERE”, these parkas showcase Canada Goose’s 58-year history of protecting people from working, living and playing in the coldest places on earth. And this year, the big opening night documentary is about Norman Lear, the legendary TV writer and producer. The movie is set in Florida in the days leading up to an aurora-style event and the film ends with the killer entering a theater. Employing more than 1,000 people worldwide, Canada Goose is a recognized leader for its Made in Canada commitment, and a long-time partner of Polar Bears International.
Legislative questions are not addressed, and even the killer’s name is not mentioned.
While it’s always nice to be honored, Redford said he really doesn’t care about the Oscars. But we’re really looking forward to seeing it anyway.
And she hopes those numbers will continue to grow.
But directors say one of the most exciting things is the atmosphere the festival has created. “We do try to find areas that aren’t getting much support…We’ve tried to do that from the beginning”.
In a year where racial tensions have boiled over in cities and college campuses across the country, the movie industry itself has faced criticism for the underrepresentation of women and minorities. There was no internet, so the story of the newscaster who shot herself live on air were just kind of passed along.
In fact, to my knowledge, this may be the most diverse lineup of films that Sundance has ever had.
“We don’t personally take a position of advocacy”, Redford said, to which Putnam later added, “We’re not an advocacy organization. It’s just a portrait of America right now”. “Are they ready to say “yes” to those sorts of projects?” He returned to the Oscars question he’d dismissed earlier, clarifying what he meant by his brisk remark, “I’m not into Oscars”. “It’s burgeoning and burgeoning, and we are horrified and move on, then are horrified and move on again”. The movie will be hitting the big screen in the United Kingdom on 22nd April. Individually, they are admirable, but together, they are an endlessly fascinating couple.
Sundance NEXT is usually the pace where films that are a little too something for the U.S. Drama Competition.
But whether these works of cinema can sway opinion is an open question. During December 2015, “GONE Episode #1: Pilgrim” quickly rose to be the number one most viewed piece of content on the service, with viewers quickly gravitating towards the “exploratory video” technology unique to the series. (That point was underscored recently when Taya Kyle, widow of “American Sniper” protagonist Chris Kyle, wrote a strongly worded op-ed for CNN arguing against gun safety laws.) The entrenched opinions on the issue, the filmmakers acknowledge, are infinitely more complex than the politics of responsibility articulated by movies like “Blackfish”.
This year also marks the 10 anniversary of Sundance’s New Frontier program. They simply slotted in the films because they saw a wave of powerful stories.
“Cincinnati played NY in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s (in the movie), so there’s a lot to talk about there”, she said. So, his film debut, “Southside With You”, starring Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers, chronicles that long afternoon in 1989 when community organizer Barack Obama convinced attorney Michelle Robinson to go on a date with him in Chicago’s South Side.
It has an impeccable record in promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity, but it does so by way of telling great stories, not by pointing fingers, said Redford, who was dressed as per the Sundance norm of casual sweater, blue jeans and cowboy boots.
