Sunderland complete first signing of the Summer
The strong defender was a surprise signing for Chelsea last term, and it soon became apparent that he was going to struggle to break in to the starting XI under then-boss Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea have sold Papy Djilobodji to Sunderland for £8m.
The 27-year-old midfielder, who played two games for Chelsea during their pre-season, is said to have agreed a four-year deal with the Premier League outfit.
Djilobodji was on loan at Werder Bremen during the second half of last season, playing an integral part in helping the club to Bundesliga safety, including an 88 minute victor on the final day to secure survival.
The Senegal global was delighted after signing for the Black Cats as he will finally enjoy regular first-team football in the English Premier League.
Chelsea have made an admirable profit from such deal, as they signed Djilobodji from Ligue 1 side Nantes for £3m last season, making £5m profit of the most recent transfer.
“We are going to do our best to give the fans what they deserve”.
He told swfc.co.uk: “The club, the manager and what the team achieved last season, it’s the kind of thing you want to be part of” and admitted “as a player, you want to be part of a club that is pushing forward and Sheffield Wednesday certainly fits the bill”.
“The coach called me and I was happy”. John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma are the only three centre-backs in the squad at the moment and the latter is just coming back from a long-term injury.
