Sunshine Summit: Day 2 focuses on ISIS
Republican presidential candidate Sen.
And numerous 2,500 Florida Republican activists who gathered for the Sunshine Summit roared, hooted and cheered his performance. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, addresses the Sunshine Summit on Friday in Orlando, Fla.
The issue of immigration arose in the fourth Republican presidential debate earlier this week, leading Cruz to accuse Rubio of being soft on unauthorized immigrants, and Rubio to respond that, as far as he knew, they had similar positions. He mocked Rubio and Texas Sen. For most of the campaign, Cruz has stressed that he “celebrates” legal immigration and wants to streamline the process. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee declared he was still in the race despite poor poll results.
Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore said he will stand up for this country. While their speeches were interesting, the candidates were predictable (OK, maybe except Donald Trump).
He praised self-reliance and American opportunity, criticizing those who “make people think that they are a victim”.
With Trump at the top of the Florida field, closely followed by Ben Carson, who also spoke at the summit Friday, other candidates are making a strong play in the state, which along with OH will be among the first states in the primary season with a winner-take-all format for their delegates.
Rubio advocated a repeal of the Affordable Care Act and promoted a three-tier tax plan that includes more tax credits for parents with children.
“God has blessed us with oil and other natural resources”, Rubio said. But Rubio challenged that Friday.
“He is a supporter of legalizing people that are in this country illegally”.
“There are 365 days in a year, four years in a presidential term, and four years in a second term”, Cruz told the audience.
“It could be Rubio this time, and another one another time”, said Ladonna Ryggs, who leads the Cruz campaign in SC, where Cruz will visit Saturday. “People up there fear me because I bring change”.
Cruz also pledged to “take on” the Environmental Protection Agency, and “the alphabet soup of federal agencies” that has “descended like locusts” on small businesses.
“We will have the best-trained, best-financed, best military in the world”, Huckabee said.
Numerous candidates’ remarks were simply add-ons to their standard stump speeches. “As long as it is a philosophical contrast and it doesn’t get personal I think all candidates are supposed to do that, especially as you get into the homestretch”.
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum kicked off his speech talking about being back in Florida, a state where his 97-year-old mother resides. He was joined by current Senate President Andy Gardiner of Orlando.
“I wandered around to listen and learn”, Bush said. “But if you want a doer, someone who’s done it and been there, then I’m your guy”.
But Bush, who served as a popular governor who implemented a series of sweeping conservative changes in Florida government, is not ready to concede the state.
