Super Bowl half time show announced
“It’s going to be wonderful and I hope we see you there”, he added.
Despite these humble dwellings, frontman Chris Martin is as enthusiastic as ever, if not more: the band seem thrilled to be performing to what is likely one of the smallest crowds they’re had in over 15 years.
Martin said the group, whose drummer Will Champion is from Southampton, were “excited and honoured” to be taking part in what he called the “Super Bowl of music”. CBS officially announced and confirmed WSJ’s report that Coldplay would headline the game’s halftime show.
The band’s artistic director Phil Harvey also admitted his nerves, and has teased fans with the promise of some special guests.
“You’re singing sounds so great” Chris told the crowd during Fix You.
“Today, it’s about how do we stage our special guests”. Previous halftime headliners include Bruno Mars, Prince, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and the Rolling Stones. Pepsi has been sponsoring the NFL’s Super Bowl Halftime Shows for the last three years and has been known for always putting on big, unforgettable productions.
The first single release, “Adventure of a Lifetime”, has had generous airplay for weeks and ranks in the German Top 20. For the event’s first decade, marching bands – from such universities as Grambling State and Florida A&M – ruled, with an occasional name celebrity (like Carol Channing and Ella Fitzgerald) joining in. Also featured are Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher of Oasis and R&B legend Merry Clayton.
The band previewed tracks from the new album during a church gig in Hackney, East London on Thursday (03Dec15).
The 2014 Coldplay album “Ghost Stories” had reflected the band’s singer-songwriter’s separation from his wife of 10 years, US-actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
Despite the event not being widely understood in their native U.K., Coldplay are the latest in a long list of British musicians to headline the halftime segment at Superbowl 50, in February 2016.
