Super fight: ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will face “GGG” Golovkin
Canelo Alvarez was on a mission to prove to the entire world that he is the best Mexican boxer on the planet Saturday night against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
It didn’t matter whether fans had on Canelo or Chavez Jr. headbands, which were being sold at a feverish rate, what truly mattered was that they were there to celebrate their country’s rich boxing history. Chavez would have paid a $1 million penalty if he had not made weight.
The 26-year-old Alvarez also weighed in at 164, nine pounds heavier than he’s ever fought. Getting a blockbuster fight out of Las Vegas might be another thing.

He lost to Sergio Martinez when a late rally fell short and then quit against Andrzej Fonfara in a light heavyweight fight in 2015. The September fight could produce an eight-figure purse for Alvarez. It’s a bout he calls personal. “He is a very active fighter – he’s very good and he beat me”. ‘Right now is a different story. The promoters knew if they put this son of a legend [Chavez Jr.] in the ring with another Mexican fighter, a Mexican fighter that’s one of the top 10 fighters in the world, they knew that the great Latino fan base would come out, and that means pay-per-view numbers, that means money.
