Superb Mathieu Flamini speaks out after scoring two against Tottenham Hotspur
Mathieu Flamini scored a brace as Arsenal beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Wednesday in much-awaited League Cup derby at White Hart Lane.
The Frenchman, who was making his first appearance of the season, smashed in on 26 minutes after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fierce shot was parried straight to him by keeper Michel Vorm.
UNLIKELY Arsenal hero Mathieu Flamini roared that he had “proved people wrong” last night (Wednesday) after scoring twice to dump Spurs out of the Capital One Cup.
Spurs, though, rallied after the restart and were level on 56 minutes when Callum Chambers deflected a cross from Nacer Chadli past his own goalkeeper David Ospina.
Wenger revealed he had told Flamini he was free to leave before the start of the season, but he was impressed with the way the veteran decided to stick around and fight for his place in his second spell at the club. Together as a team we knew our jobs and we defended well.
“I believe we were unfortunate in Zagreb to have a man sent-off and at Chelsea as well, but you want your players to behave in a ideal way and not to show any response at all“, Wenger said.
“We got ourselves back into the game at 1-1″.
“Tottenham gave absolutely everything but on 70 minutes we could take advantage as they dropped a little bit in their intensity”.
Supporters at the front of the upper tier ripped advertising boards out of their brackets, with many pieces falling on to their fellow fans in the stand below.
Kane’s bicycle kick forced Kieran Gibbs to head off the line as Tottenham’s bombardment continued, but Arsenal’s introduction of Alexis Sanchez would help stem the tide.
“I don’t think they will [take into account the red card was rescinded]”. “They were always very decisive games between those teams”. We learnt that Arsenal no longer need a world class striker.
A good solid performance at goal, though the own goal came as a result of a mix-up with Chambers at the back.
Pochettino continued: “I don’t regret (my selections) – you can make mistakes, remember when (Diego) Maradona missed a penalty?”
