SuperBloodMoon – super moon and lunar eclipse photos
ICYMI last night, the Mount Washington Observatory posted a quick review of the lunar eclipse.
Roberts says it’s a “super moon” because it’s 14 per cent brighter than usual and it’s a harvest moon, which before the days of electricity was what farmers used to harvest late into the evening.
Since the moon is going to be at its closest ever point to the Earth at this time, it looked 13% larger than most of the other full moons that we see.
“That may or may not occur during a full moon phase”, Jooste said. A total lunar eclipse coinciding with a “supermoon” hasn’t happened for 33 years, and won’t be repeated again for another 18 years. “Sometimes it only shows that half shadow over it”, he said.
The eclipse began at about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, with the full face of the moon cast in the Earth’s shadow by 7:11 p.m. The moon begin emerging from Earth’s shadow at 8:23 p.m.
The Vulcan Trek Station is the place to be this Sunday night to see the lunar eclipse. Not only are we talking about a supermoon, but a TOTAL lunar eclipse, also known as a “Blood Moon.”Let me break it down for you…Super moon – this is when the full moon correlates with the moon being closest to Earth in it’s orbit”.
As part of the eclipse, the moon will also turn a reddish-orange color – a phenomenon some like to call a “blood moon”.
According to the South African Weather Service, the interior of the country should have mostly clear skies around 3am, while from Cape Town up to Durban cloudy skies might interfere in a clear viewing.
