Superintedents break down value of Common Core testing
Senate Education Committee Chairman Conrad Appel, R-Metairie, said the review is a chance to ensure rigorous classroom standards so that Louisiana can emerge from the “bottom of all those socioeconomic measures”.
Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Brian McDonald declined to say whether he was in favor of suspending the test.
“I don’t think it’s a big secret to anybody that works in education, that probably your No. 1 factor in determining how schools are performing is the poverty rate”, he said.
Reactions to the CAHSEE suspension among students were mixed. What’s worse, 20 percent of the schools do not have an arts teacher of any kind.

“When students refuse to participate in state assessments, districts and schools are at risk of becoming ineligible for grants, such as Reward School Grants, that require schools and/or districts to make AYP and/or be in Good Standing as a condition for funding”, Burman said in an email. Louisiana’s new academic standards committees for public schools meet Wednesday (Aug. 19) in Baton Rouge to start a closely watched review. “Higher standards, along with real accountability and school choice and ending social promotion and teacher effectiveness plans and rewarding teachers for continuous improvement [in] student learning – all that together yields rising student achievement”.
