Superman will be felt but not seen on ‘Supergirl’

At a Supergirl panel Monday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, executive producer Greg Berlanti said he “grew up worshipping” Richard Donner’s Superman films “and their magic and their fun”. We’d say, if the show struggles for ratings, a crossover may be engineered sooner rather than later.

Producer Ali Adler added: “We’re very excited that this series is very much the adventures of Supergirl”. If I were to just casually namedrop the DC Comics character Non, most of you probably would have no idea who Im talking about.

“She was the cousin of Superman and sent here on Earth to watch over him”, says Geoff Johns, chief creative officer of DC Comics. But one of the great joys of Supergirl is that she really loves being Supergirl, and you see, you only believe that and you only get that because Melissa loves being Supergirl.

“I just knew automatically that she’s such a beacon of hope and I knew that her bravery and strength was intrinsic to who she is and I really needed to feel it myself in order to play her”, Benoist said.

With Donald Trump’s presidential bid generating news as well as comedy gold, Stephen Colbert is itching to get his share of the laughs once he returns to the air September 8 as host of CBS’ “The Late Show”. “We have not had conversations about crossovers” in terms of characters, “but we are doing crossover promotions”. “You will see him in the background, but he does play a part in her evolution of becoming a superhero”.

Kara may fly faster than a speeding bullet, but by day she is Anne Hathaway to Calista Flockhart’s Meryl Streep. Is Melissa Benoist the right actress to play the beloved superheroine? That show isn’t on its usual Thursday’s at that point due to the football season, so it’ll be moving back there in November and Supergirl eases down to the 8pm slot.

One vignette in the first episode has Kara showing up for an online date, only to have the jerk that she’s meeting take a fake phone call and bail on her.

“We experience it with any show we introduce”, Berlanti said.

Superman will not be seen swooping-in with his cape as the character will only be playing a mentor-role. I am, of course, referring to Lucy (and Lois) father, General Sam Lane.

CBS’s first major superhero drama has come under some criticism already for choosing to adapt the Supergirl character, rather than Superwoman.
