Supermoon plus eclipse equals rare sky show Sunday night
As a bonus, the moon is at its closest point to Earth right now, so it will appear slightly larger than most full moons.
Televangelist John Hagee of Texas wrote in his 2013 book Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change that the latest “tetrad” is a prediction of terrorism around the world and increased nuclear threat. The partial lunar eclipse is set to begin at 9:07 p.m. ET Sunday and will be visible to most people in the Americas, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, according to EarthSky.org. “Because the orbit of the moon is not a ideal circle, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times during its orbit”, explains Noah Petro, deputy project scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Craig Joseph, the planetarium director at St. Petersburg College, said, “It’s basically the moon being covered by the shadow of the Earth, so it’s one big rock passing over another big rock”. Rather, sunlight will bend through Earth’s atmosphere, with only the red light making it to the moon and reflecting back to us.
“It will start taking on the look like Pac-Man bit the moon”, McMath said, referring to the old video game that features a yellow moonlike character with a gaping mouth that chomps things.
In this total lunar eclipse, earth’s shadow will cover up the moon as the planet will come between the sun and the moon. This occurrence is known as a blood moon.
Americans will actually see a total solar eclipse (in August 2017) before the next total lunar eclipse.
Not everyone is looking forward to the incredible supermoon Sunday night.
During totality, the moon can take on array of colors from red to dark brown or bright orange. A Super Moon is basically when a Full Moon appears larger than normal in the sky. Here is info about when it will happen and where you can see it.
This is one celestial event you won’t want to miss. “Just hold up your fingers REALLY high to make shadow puppet figures!”
