Support Your Local Postal Carrier’s Food Drive May 12th
Last year, Long Islanders donated 268,582 pounds of food in the one-day food drive.
“People don’t realize that there is such a large need for food”, said Stephen Shelley, the COO of Farm Share.
That’s why a huge event this Saturday is so critical.
The reference is to the Delta food pantry in Pauls Valley, which works with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
Every dollar donated will provide four meals for Oklahomans with “inconsistent access” to healthy food.
Food drives, no matter how big or small, are all impressive.
He said residents who are not able to leave food by their mailbox on Saturday may drop off a bag of food at their local post office in Clarksville-Montgomery County.
Postcard reminders and paper bags are distributed by letter carriers a few days before the collection. Programs include Emergency Assistance, Campership and Scholarship. It’s another easy way to help put food on the table for our neighbors, Young explained. “During the summer, the need is much greater”. So they have a set, you know, they know where their meal is coming from.
All you have to do is live a non-perishable food donation at or near your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick it up for you. Other food needs are crackers, granola bars, macaroni and cheese, pasta, soup, canned meats, juices, canned vegetables, fruit and tomato products. Community organizations are partnering with NALC members to make this 2018 food drive a success. The food drive in the Black Hills region and across the state will benefit Feeding South Dakota. This year’s goal is 1.2 million.
“Too many people in this country are going hungry”, NALC President Fredric Rolando said. That represents the 14th consecutive year the drive has surpassed 70 million pounds.
This Saturday, May 12, the neighborhood letter carrier will be picking up more than the occasional letter.
